Betelgeuse’s new companion, with discoverer Steven Howell

On July 21, 2025, astronomers announced they discovered a companion star in a tight orbit around the beloved red supergiant star Betelgeuse, in the constellation Orion. How did they find it? On March 26, 2025, an international team of astronomers using the Webb space telescope said they identified bright hydrogen emission from a galaxy in an unexpectedly early time in the universe’s history. The surprise finding challenges researchers to explain how this light could have pierced the thick fog of neutral hydrogen that filled space at that time. Watch the video with Will Triggs above for more, and then read the story here.

Secretary birds are expert snake killers

Every week, Cristina Ortiz brings you news and fascinating stories from the animal kingdom. In February, Cristina shared this video of the long-legged and lethal secretary birds, which can stomp a snake to death. In fact, they can deliver blows to snakes faster than the blink of an eye, quite literally! Watch the video about secretary birds above, and read more about them here.

These bizarre dead stars make gold

Powerful flares from magnetars – compact, dead stars with intense magnetic fields – can create heavy elements such as gold and platinum. Scientists think a single flare from magnetar SGR 1806–20 in 2004 produced not only billions of tons of gold, but a huge mass of heavy elements, possibly equal to 1/3 of Earth’s mass. Eruptions like these could account for up to 10% of the universe’s heavy elements. Watch the video above, and read more about magnetars that create gold here.
