The Vermont Army Aviation Support Facility in South Burlington, Vermont, recently hosted the U.S. Army Medical Department Board. The board held its Automatic Chest Compression Device proof-of-concept demonstration test. Four candidates tested four ACCD devices. The focus was on testing form, fit, function and usability. The demonstration also tested any capability gaps.

What this device brings to the fight

The ACCD facilitates consistent blood flow from the moment it is turned on, helping to improve a patient’s chance for a successful outcome. The automatic chest compression system is designed to deliver uninterrupted compressions at a consistent rate and depth to facilitate the return of spontaneous circulation. It delivers automated compressions from first response in the field to medical transport and throughout the medical facility. With this device, defibrillation can occur during ongoing compressions that can prime the heart for a successful shock. Also, continuous compressions help maintain coronary perfusion pressure needed to facilitate the return of spontaneous circulation.

What this means for the warfighter/field medic/corpsman

  • Effective, consistent and uninterrupted compressions
  • Increased operational effectiveness
  • Improved personnel safety during cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Improved operations in the field
  • Reduced number of medical personnel needed to assist with CPR during a cardiac emergency.
  • Continuous, effective compressions, helping to maintain good circulation in the patient during transport
  • Simple and easy to use with minimal training, keeping the cost of ownership low
